Alaskans love to collect old cars. The informal arrangements stem less from conscious choice than very gradual accumulation. We found these in Fairbanks. The Mat-Su Valley is famous for its cabbages. Denali National Park is nice any time of year, but the fall colors are particularly gorgeous. These Homer boats seem to have been washed ashore. The town of Portage was destroyed in 1964's famous Good Friday Earthquake. The ruins are fairly impressive. Bush pilots are an enduring feature of many Alaskan communities. They are renowned for their toughness and casual heroism. The Homer Spit accomodates all kinds of campers. When you visit Valdez, you'll want to take a stroll around the small boat harbor. Nice harbors may also be found in Seward and Cordova. This is how Valdez looks in winter. The snowbanks get so high that residents have a tradition of projecting movies onto them, drive-in style.
