Turnagain Arm, Alaska: A Drive Down the Alaska Coast
urnagain
Arm, a narrow extension of the eponymous Cook Inlet, was
given its unusual name by renowned explorer Captain Cook,
when he was forced to "turn" his ship back "again"
after failing to find a river. Today Turnagain Arm is home
to one of the most scenic stretches of highway in Alaska.
Among Turnagain Arm's attractions is Beluga Point, formerly a hunting
camp used by Native Americans for spotting beluga whales
at sea and sheep on the cliffs behind them. The whales and
the sheep are still there, and Beluga Point's spotting scopes
provide close-up views. |
