Portage and Whittier, Alaska: Glaciers and More Glaciers

ifty miles south of Anchorage, off the Seward Highway Scenic Byway, there's a turnoff toward the Portage Glacier. The "Portage Highway" has a number of scenic pullouts (some suitable for those who are in wheelchairs or have difficulty walking). These include Moose Flats, Alder Pond and the Explorer Glacier Viewpoint. There's a wheelchair-accessible fish-viewing platform on Williwaw Creek, right near the visitor center, where eagles, gulls, dipper and ducks can be seen, along with salmon. There are several public campgrounds on this road, also. You will want to visit the Begich, Boggs Visitor Center, as well, at the end of the road. It's shown in the photograph below. You can also drive or take a bus into Whittier, a town that was formerly accessible only by train or by boat. Whittier is a jumping-off point for many excursions into Prince William Sound.
