Denali-Healy, Alaska: In the Shadow of Mt. McKinley
enali-Healy
is a perfect jumping-off point to a number of activities,
such as camping and canoeing (the people in the photograph
below are taking a turn on Otto Lake). Located just north
of Denali National Park itself, the Healy region retains
the extraordinary beauty that people have come to associate
with the Denali Park area. While it is true that gold rush
stampedes began in the Denali region in 1903, Healy's wealth
comes from the more ordinary minerals. The names of Healy's
roads reflect this (they are named after graphite, coal,
sulfide, carbon, quartz, and so on) and the Usibelli Coal
Mine is a driving force in Healy. While you're visiting
Denali Park, stop in and say hello to some of the people
who actually live in the shadow of North America's largest
mountain. |
