Delta Junction, Alaska: Farming is Serious Business
arming
is serious business in Delta Junction, the official end
of the Alaska Highway. Delta Junction farmers first came
from the west to work on the Delta Barley Project, and their
farms are huge. Some are up to 3,500 acres. Agricultural
tours of the Delta farms are available (just ask at the
visitor center). This area includes a meat-packing plant,
a yak herd, experimental test plots, bison, elk and reindeer
farms, and a full range of crops, including grass, field
peas, oats, canola and barley. Delta also grows good potatoes.
And it is known in Interior Alaska for its fresh, delicious
milk. |
