Anchorage, Alaska: How Anchorage Got Its Name

nchorage got an interesting start. During the Gold Rush of a century ago, Anchorage was not really a town.

The big town in the area was nearby Knik (pronounced Ka-NICK), which is now a tiny ghost town. Knik was linked to the Iditarod Trail and the northern goldfields. But it didn't have a good port

Incoming boats, laden with miners and supplies, moored their ships at a nearby "anchorage," and then ferried over to the shallow waters near Knik in small skiffs.

This "anchorage" later became the town of Anchorage.
