start. During the Gold Rush of a century ago, Anchorage was not really a town.
The big town in the area
was nearby Knik (pronounced Ka-NICK), which is now a tiny ghost town. Knik was linked to the Iditarod Trail and the
northern goldfields. But it didn't have a good port
Incoming
boats, laden with miners and supplies, moored their ships
at a nearby "anchorage," and then ferried over
to the shallow waters near Knik in small skiffs.
This "anchorage" later became the town of Anchorage. |
